Why Drug Abuse and Addiction is a Disease – That Can Be Stopped

For a lot of people it’s very hard for them to understand why people become addicted to drugs or alcohol. For these people they experience a normal life and can cope with whatever stress the day throws their way. Because they can cope with their problems they often view those who cannot as being weak. They think that drug abuse and addiction can simply be stopped if the person is mentally strong enough, and that changing their behaviors will help fix their problem. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Friends, family and co-workers often have no understanding of the complexities of addiction. Few are willing to recognize or accept that it is a disease, and because of the way it affects the brain the person is not capable of using willpower to stop. Many don’t realize that with current medical advances, there are now treatment methods that will help the addict and will work, allowing them to lead happy and productive lives again.

Addiction is a condition that at its most basic level, is a brain disease that causes the addict to become compulsive about using despite the consequences that will result from this behavior. It actually changes the function and structure of one’s brain. In the beginning the decision to start is often of their own choosing, but in time the changes caused to the brain will cause a person to lose control of their ability to moderate their usage, as well as affecting their judgment to make a decision to stop. The impulses from the brain can be so intense that they simply cannot stop.

These changes to the brain are what makes it so difficult for the addict to control their actions. Through medical research there are now treatments available that combine medication with behavior therapy, and people who use this combination have a better chance at success than with many other kinds of treatments. This disease is a chronic one and relapses often occur. This does not signify failure, but simple that other treatments should be tried or that the current treatment needs to be adjusted. Science is beginning to revolutionize our understanding of drug abuse and addiction and how to treat this condition.

The problem of addiction is a very costly one for society. It is estimated that almost $500 billion dollars a year is put into numerous programs and treatments, not to mention the cost of the crime that is usually involved in order for someone to feed their habit. This does not even address the social cost as families are broken apart, addicts lose their jobs and things such as child abuse and domestic violence start to increase.

Science is today actually proving that drug abuse and addiction is a very preventable condition. It has been shown that preventative programs are extremely effective in preventing the cycle of addiction from even starting. With programs that involve families, communities and schools, as well as the media, addiction can be stopped before it even starts. Today youths are being educated about the risks involved with drug abuse, and with this knowledge and understanding, many will make the decision to not even begin. As this message gets stronger with the help of teachers and healthcare professionals. Kids and adults who know that they are at risk, are now choosing to not even take the risk of starting. This is a start toward controlling the problem and the subsequent social issues that can result from addiction.

Are Steroids Necessary to Excel?

As a 35 year fitness veteran I have worked with thousands of athletes, some of them using steroids. Many of these athletes believe that this is the only way to get results. The fact is that intelligent training can closely match the results of steroid use without the side effects.

There is a wealth of information available in the area of sports science explaining how to naturally optimize the body’s ability to produce testosterone, estrogen, and growth hormone and how to train more effectively. Unfortunately athletes are still not tapping into this knowledge as is evident by the pervading paradigm amongst serious athletes, recreational athletes, and the general population of fitness enthusiasts that the more they train, the better they will perform.

This mentality can eventually lead to decrements in performance through overtraining syndrome (OTS) which is very prevalent in sports today and unfortunately also very common in young athletes, where it tends to manifest in the form of increased injury rates.

I believe this need to recover from overtraining and pressure to perform invites steroid use. Understanding that exercise even slightly in excess of our adaptive capacity will result in overtraining prompted me to experiment with programs that would optimize results and performance by enhancing the recovery ability of the body.

A new training system I developed (3 Cycle Training) embraces quality over quantity. This program explains how to create a metabolic stimulus to the body (the catabolic phase) with less volume of work. This allows for a more effective recovery cycle (anabolic phase) as you are not overtaxing the body’s ability to adapt.

If an athlete is getting results because he or she is not in a catabolic state all the time, the need for steroids is eliminated. In my book 2-Days to Fitness I redefine what effective exercise is. In fact I go so far as to say that most every thing you know about exercise is wrong!

Rick Bramos has trained thousands of clients beginning in 1973 as a Physical Activities Specialist in the U.S. Army. Rick opened the first Gold’s Gym in S.C. in 1982 and was one of the few men certified to teach Step, Spinning, Body Pump And other classes in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Drug Abuse – The 7 Traps of Drug Abuse

Drug abuse – if you knew what your life would end up looking like as a drug addict, I’m sure you’d never start. So here are some of the traps I’ve seen.

Trap #1 – You’re hooked before you know it. Some drugs instantly hook you, while others slowly pull you in.

You want to fit in. You want to be accepted by your new friends. So you take the drugs when they’re offered. After all, doing it just once won’t hurt! How could having all these good feelings be so bad?

Trap #2 – Your finances go down the drain as you now use your money to buy drugs, instead of food and other necessities.

Always seeking the next “high” or a better “high,” you are persuaded that this next hit will provide it. In fact, you’ll do anything to get the money to buy the drugs.

Trap #3 – You start doing bad things in order to feed your habit.

You find yourself doing things you never dreamed you would ever do. Things like lying to friends and family. Stealing. Selling your possessions, or someone else’s possessions. You don’t return phone calls. You avoid your friends. You lose close family relationships.

Trap #4 – You begin to bargain with God.

“God, if you’ll get me out of this mess, I’ll do whatever You want me to do.” You wait for God to miraculously cure you of your addiction. And if He doesn’t, you turn your back on God.

Trap #5 – You feel so sorry for yourself that you don’t even try to quit.

You’ve reached the bottom of your life. You think you’ll never get out of the hell hole you’re in. You listen to others tell you that since your drug addiction is a disease, you’ll never be able to overcome it, only manage it. (This is a lie, by the way!)

Trap #6 – Your body and health deteriorates.

Your body wastes away from the drugs and lack of healthy food. Your teeth begin to rot. Your face looks hollow.

Trap #7 – You now live on the streets or in a homeless shelter.

The Role of Steroids in Gyms

Recommend Article Article CommentsIn today’s world hitting the gym and building your body until it reaches an ideal level has become really popular and you see more and more gyms popping up everywhere. This also has a lot to do with the large amount of focus the media puts on looking muscular and being as ripped as possible.

A lot of times the media presents us with unrealistic pictures that have been photo shopped and altered in order to look extra extreme, furthermore the media never actually tells people that most of the “natural” bodybuilders have used some sort of enhancing product to achieve their impressive physiques.

I am not against people using steroids as long as they are not competing. If people use steroids for personal reasons and because they want to look more muscular I think it is their own choice. However I think it is unfair that there is so much pressure on the new generation of today and how this pressure gets young boys and adolescents to take steroids because they don’t feel masculine or big enough.

Steroids are very harmful and can have severe effects on your body, especially when they are used wrong. If you know what you are doing you can use anabolic hormones with minimal side effects (you will still have side effects, however you will minimize these effects as much as possible). However, a lot of people who become addicted to using these compounds, have no idea of what they are doing and just buy whatever they can get.

The fact that a lot of these products are created in underground labs around the world due to the fact that they are illegal substances, really makes it a gamble to use these drugs. You actually don’t know what you are going to put into your body and there have been reports of all sorts of things including rat poison being found in these compounds.

The best thing you can do is to stay away from such performance enhancing drugs and educate yourself of how you can build an ideal body naturally. You might not be able to get as big as some of the juice heads in your gym, you will however keep your health intact and you will be really grateful for this once you get a little bit older. Down let pressure lead you into ruining your body.

7 Ways to Gain the Competitive Edge Without Steroids!

Remember when Ben Johnson got busted for steroid use? How about the whole Barry Bonds episode in Major League Baseball? The point is people overwhelmingly felt cheated and taken advantage of; because these athletes that they trusted and looked up to turned out to be nothing more than liars. Steroids and other performance enhancing substances are simply forms of cheating. They provide an unfair advantage over athletes that are clean and not using.

With competitive sports being as high speed and fast paced as it is today; many athletes are simply looking for an edge or a shortcut. The bottom line is there are no short cuts. Today’s athletes can get the competitive edge however. Here are some ways that a competitive athlete can get the edge over their competition.

1. The mental edge – There is no greater weapon than that of the mind of someone who is mentally focused, disciplined and sharp. The ability to stay convicted and abstain from all of the shortcuts like steroids and other illegal drugs is integral in gaining the edge, discipline and mental endurance to be able to to take the harsh punishment of the long road and keep moving forward. The focused and disciplined mind is what will direct the athlete to the winners circle.

2. Proper training – There is no substitute for training smart and hard. The right training and taking all of the necessary steps never short cutting is where the athletes individual skills are developed for competition. This means not taking days off, just because of boredom; which also goes back to the “Mental edge”.

3. Strength training – Its necessary to develop the corresponding muscles used in the athlete’s particular sport. If the athlete trains in an endurance event then the strength training should focus on high repetitions. If the athlete is a powerlifter then explosive movements should be practiced. The bottom line is that the muscles of the body need to be trained correctly.

4. Cardio conditioning – The heart and lungs are key in athletic training these two organs help determine how efficiently the athlete utilizes oxygen. Also cardio training helps prevent or prolong the crippling effects of fatigue.Proper cardio training aids in speedy recovery!

5. Diet and nutrition – This is very important!!! Everyone has heard of the expression you are what you eat. This is a true expression. If you eat lots of fat; you will be. If you eat sugars, then you will experience constant ups and downs in energy spikes. An athlete should eat a relatively lean diet rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and protein!! Bottom line don’t go overboard and stay balanced.

6. Hydration – The body is comprised of 75% water. When one exercises they lose water in the form of sweat. When the body loses water it also loses salts and other essential nutrients / electrolytes that keep the body’s batteries charged. Water also helps transport the nutrients of the food in your stomach being digested to the right areas of the body where they are needed.

6. Rest and recovery – You can train as hard and as often as you want; but if you don’t get proper sleep and rest enough; you will pay the price. Everyone is different. some people need only 6 hours of sleep and others need 12. Find out how much rest and sleep you need and apply it to your training program. The bottom line here is sleep is when your body replenishes, recovers, repairs and builds. You need rest.

Most athletes train extremely vigorously on a pro and semi pro level. Hard intense training causes the body to use and lose key nutrients and minerals which must be supplemented in order to keep up to healthy levels. Training is stress and many top athletes put extreme amounts of stress on their minds and bodies. Stress can tear the body apart slowly. Along with diet training and rest, there are supplements. Supplements are just that they help supplement what you already do naturally.

7. Supplementation – There is a vast array of Protein Creatine, vitamins B, C, etc. etc. on the market. These supplements are out there because with intense training and a proper diet alone the body can not bring it’s level of these supplements up to needed levels alone. Supplements are not Steroids and they are not performance enhancing drugs. they should be used with caution and doctor supervision.

What is Complementary Medicine?

Complementary medicine is becoming popular in western world, every year millions of consultation is taking place and statistics says that one in every three persons have tried it. It is really helpful for chronic conditions which could not be treated with other medications.

Now it is widely accepted in orthodox medicines that doctors are either trained in this or referring patients to complementary therapies or incorporating complementary therapist into their practice. So, nowadays complementary medicine is very common in specialists, hospitals, gyms, schools, beauty clinics.

While this form of medicine has become popular, patients are asking for its effectiveness and safety. Hence complementary medicine practitioners are well trained and their professional associations are working hard to raise the standards.

Complementary medicine was once called as alternative medicine as it was treated as alternative to orthodox, allopathic medicine. Few accepted alternative medicine terminology while others felt that is forming a barrier between complementary and orthodox medicine while both can work very well together. Hence the name complementary medicine came into picture.

So what forms complementary medicine? ancient traditions provides root to this like the medical systems of India, China, Tibet. While the argument continues that these medications like Traditional Chinese medicines should not be considered as alternative medicines as they were practiced for thousands of years. But their revitalization puts them in modern health care approach firmly.

Complementary therapies are developed from ancient roots such as acupuncture from Traditional Chinese medicine while others like osteopathy developed recently from the work of an US army doctor.

Osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbalism and homeopathy are well established in UK while naturopathy is also well established in US, Germany and Australia. Few other therapies like nutritional therapy is also growing popular.

Osteopathy and Chiropractic have become mainstream in UK as they are regulated by law and included in medical insurance practiced on the National Health Service. It is referred for health problems such as back and neck pain by the practitioners. As a matter of fact for some people this is considered as professions allied to medicine.

Controversy exists with complementary medicines too particularly on homeopathy developed in 18th century in Germany whether it is all in mind or really does it work? Cranial osteopathy a subtle form of osteopathy is also in question.

Crystal, color, and light therapy even though has committed and serious practitioner is considered as weird and wacky.

Hope that you have got a good idea about what is complementary medicine?

Build Muscle Bulk With Ease – What 3 Things Do You Need to Know For Proven Results?

Have you tried to build muscle bulk only to find you were unsuccessful?  Or, maybe you have avoided it thinking you would be unable to achieve your goal because it requires too much time or work.  Well it’s time to give it a try if it’s your first time or try again if you’ve attempted to do so before.  But in your efforts, remember these three things to get proven results.

  1. Lifting the heaviest weight you possibly can doesn’t mean you will get results, especially the ones you are looking for.  Now you might be thinking I’m out of my gourd making a statement like this but I have my reasons.  Think back to when you are lifting heavy.  What does your form look like?  Are you throwing your back, arms, and legs into the mix when you are performing a chest press?  How do your pecs get the work if all of those other muscles are absorbing the majority of the effort?  What about going the full range of motion?  With the weight you are lifting, are you limited on how far back you can pull the weight on a seated row?  You’re cheating the primary muscles you are intending to work if you lift so heavy that you are foregoing proper form and technique.  Thus, you are compromising your results.
  2. While protein intake is important, it is not the only perquisite to building muscle bulk.  I know you’ve heard it a thousand times.  Protein, protein, protein if you want to build muscle.  Hey, I know.  I’ve done my share of protein supplementation because that’s what all the ads in the muscle mags said.  But then I learned the truth.  You can drink all of the protein you want, but if you aren’t lifting weights causing your muscle tissue to breakdown and then repair, you won’t build any muscle bulk.  See, the protein help in the repair process but it doesn’t provide the source of energy you need to perform the exercise.  That’s where carbs come into play.  In addition, the type of protein you consume doesn’t matter but nothing beat the good ole’ fashion protein found in the foods we eat.
  3. You don’t have to spend multiple hours at the gym on a daily basis to build muscle bulk.  In fact, sometimes excessive lifting can actually be detrimental to your efforts.  An effective workout to build muscle bulk really only takes an hour, two at the most.  That’s all!  In that time you can warm up, stretch, perform a full body weight lifting routine, get your cardio when applicable, and cool down.  And yes, all of those activities are key ingredients in your muscle building success.

These things pieces of information are important to remember if you are trying to build muscle bulk.  Plus, they go hand in hand with the following exercise routine:

Perform in pairs

Leg Press or Squats Hanging Leg Raises

Flat Bench Chest Press Seated Row

Incline Bench Press Lat Bar Pulldown

Arm work if desired: Barbell Bicep Curls Tricep Press

On all exercises… 1 warm/up set/10 reps at 60% maximum weight 3 sets/6-8 reps (last set to failure)

The truth is that when it comes to body building, most any workout will help someone who is just starting out to build muscle bulk. But for many people who want to literally transform their body, not just any workout will do. For example, slender or “skinny” people wouldn’t perform the same routine that the guys from WWF wrestling would. Typically you’ll find that different metabolism, muscle fiber type, flexibility, etc. means different routines are necessary to achieve optimal results.
